Fiumicino Airport Terminal Guide: T1, T3 and the Boarding Areas

Rome Fiumicino has two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, joined inside a single building. T1 handles domestic and Schengen flights and boards from area A; T3 handles non-Schengen and intercontinental flights and boards from area E. This guide also covers passport control, the station, left luggage, taxis and hotel shuttle stops.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 3

Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) assigns terminals by destination. ITA Airways checks in every passenger at Terminal 1, whatever the destination. ADR’s carrier list on adr.it covers 104 airlines: Aegean Airlines, airBaltic and Aeroitalia, for example, use T1, while Aer Lingus, Aerolineas Argentinas and Air Algerie use T3. ADR states that assignments can change, so check your boarding pass and the airport screens.

Both terminals have three levels: level 0 for arrivals and baggage reclaim, level 1 for check-in and security, and level 2, a mezzanine with connections and services. Terminal 2 no longer exists; older maps still show it.

Boarding areas A and E

ADR’s airport map lists two boarding areas:

• Area A (T1, Schengen): gates A1 to A3, A21 to A27, A31 to A52 and A61 to A83.
• Area E (T3, non-Schengen): gates E1 to E8, E11 to E24, E31 to E44 and E51 to E61.

Area A was rebuilt in two stages: the new boarding area opened in 2022, and a renewed pier of about 25,000 square metres with 22 gates followed in April 2023. The gate letters B, C and D no longer appear on ADR’s map; the multi-storey car parks A, B, C and D are unrelated to gates. ADR describes T3 as the larger terminal, with longer walks, but publishes no walking times.

Passport control and connections

Passport control separates area A from area E. From a Schengen flight to a non-Schengen one, you pass passport control and then check the screens for your gate in area E. From a non-Schengen flight to a Schengen one, you go through security and then passport control, and follow signs to area A. Between two non-Schengen flights, you go through security again but not passport control, and stay in area E. Transfer desks handle connection queries.

Station, walkway and left luggage

ADR’s FAQ places the railway station at the Terminal 3 exits on the departures level. The Leonardo Express reaches Roma Termini in 32 minutes for 14 euros; the transfer guide covers it and the FL1.

Hilton Rome Airport is joined to the terminals by a covered pedestrian tunnel with a moving walkway, under 10 minutes on foot. Air Rooms Rome Airport by HelloSky is landside, reached on foot from the terminals and from the multi-storey car parks.

Left luggage is in T3 international arrivals, next to the bus station: 07:00 to 23:00, 10 euros per bag per 24 hours.

Taxis, chauffeur cars and hotel shuttles

Taxis wait at the arrivals level of T1 and T3. Official taxis are white, with a TAXI roof sign and the licence number on the doors. ADR lists a fixed fare of 55 euros to central Rome within the Aurelian Walls and a 25-euro minimum for rides within Fiumicino. Chauffeur cars (NCC) must be booked in advance; drivers collect at the ground floor of multi-storey car park B for T1 and in car park PR7 for T3.

Every hotel shuttle leaves from T3 arrivals:

• Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport: ADR’s free Airport Line e-shuttle from entrance 3, 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes.
• Best Western Hotel Rome Airport: outside door 4, on the pavement by the bus parking; 8 euros per person each way.
• Mercure Rome Leonardo da Vinci Airport: outside door 4, bus stop 1; 7 euros per person each way.
• Rome Airport Hotel Fiumicino: door 4, across the first carriageway, minibus bay 3; the fee is not published.

At night

ADR does not publish closing hours for the terminals. First aid, the Hilton Garden Inn shuttle and ADR’s long-stay parking shuttle run 24 hours. Left luggage closes at 23:00, and most lounges between 21:30 and 23:00. See sleeping at Fiumicino and early flights.
