Fiumicino is a comfortable airport to pass through and an awkward one to sleep in. It has no capsule-hotel operation behind security, so the realistic options are a room in the airport complex, a lounge, or a hotel a few minutes away. Which makes sense depends almost entirely on how many hours you have.

The one in-airport option is Air Rooms Rome Airport by HelloSky: 29 rooms run by GIS in partnership with the airport operator, bookable from a few hours to several days. They can be booked simply to shower and change before a connecting flight, which is exactly what a long layover often needs.

One important detail to plan around: the facility is landside, in the public area near the terminals, reachable on foot and from the ABCD parking at Terminal 3. If you are connecting and intend to stay behind security, it will not work for you without clearing immigration and passing through security again.

Lounges in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3

Fiumicino has a good spread of lounges, several of which are open to paying passengers rather than only premium ticket holders. Plaza Premium operates lounges in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, with a First Lounge in T1, and there is a Primeclass lounge alongside airline lounges from ITA Airways, Emirates and British Airways. A lounge will not give you a bed, but for a four to six hour gap it buys quiet, a seat that reclines, food, and in several cases a shower.

Sleeping in the terminals

If you do end up staying in the terminal, expect the usual airport realities: bright lighting, announcements, cleaning machines and seating designed to discourage lying down. Bring an eye mask and earplugs, keep valuables against you, and pick a spot near an active area rather than an isolated corner. Left-luggage facilities let you sleep without your bags.

Remember that Fiumicino now runs Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 only, connected within one building, so moving between them on foot is straightforward.

When a hotel is the better answer

For anything over about eight hours, or any overnight before a morning departure, a bed wins. Hilton Rome Airport is the only hotel joined to the terminals by covered walkway, so there is no shuttle to catch and no weather to cross. Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport runs a free shuttle to Terminal 3 at a lower rate, and Best Western Hotel Rome Airport or Rome Airport Hotel Fiumicino are a few minutes away with paid shuttles.
