Fiumicino or Ciampino: Rome's Two Airports
Rome has two passenger airports, both run by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR). Fiumicino (“Leonardo da Vinci”) handled 51.3 million passengers in 2025 and Ciampino (G. B. Pastine) 4 million. The fixed taxi fare to the centre is 55 euros from Fiumicino and 40 euros from Ciampino, and a taxi between the two airports is also a fixed 55 euros.

Which airlines use Ciampino
ADR describes Ciampino as an airport for low-cost airlines, express couriers and general aviation. Ryanair flies from both Ciampino and Fiumicino, and in September 2025 it named the Ciampino limit of 65 flights a day as the main constraint on its Rome growth. Wizz Air lists both Rome airports on its own site. An airline’s name therefore does not tell you the airport: check the code on the booking, FCO or CIA. ITA Airways checks in at Fiumicino Terminal 1, and long-haul flights use Fiumicino.
Getting into Rome from each airport
From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for 14 euros, and the FL1 serves Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense and Roma Tiburtina but not Termini. Coaches and taxis cover the rest; the transfer guide has the details.
Ciampino has no station at the terminal. Trenitalia’s Ciampino Airlink combines a 10-minute bus from the square in front of the airport to Ciampino station with a regional train to Roma Termini, on one 2.70-euro ticket. ADR lists coaches to Termini run by SIT, Terravision and Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini), and local buses 720 to Laurentina and 520 to Cinecittà, both metro stations. The fixed taxi fare of 40 euros covers the centre and also Roma Ostiense and Roma Tiburtina stations.
Transferring between Ciampino and Fiumicino
A taxi between the airports costs a fixed 55 euros, set by Roma Capitale and listed by ADR at both airports. The car crosses Rome on the GRA, and the time depends on traffic. By public transport, the route runs through Roma Termini: Ciampino Airlink to Termini, then the Leonardo Express to Fiumicino, for 16.70 euros in total. On separate tickets, a missed onward flight is at your cost, so leave several hours between a landing at one airport and a departure from the other.
Why a Fiumicino hotel does not help a Ciampino flight
The hotels on this site are all at or near Fiumicino, on the opposite side of Rome from Ciampino. From any of them, the shortest trip to Ciampino is the 55-euro taxi, and the public transport route goes through Termini. For an early Ciampino departure, a hotel near Roma Termini or near Ciampino is closer.
